BEAT BOTH GAMES!
Poker and business winners have similar skills and mindsets. No matter whether you’re in poker or business, you’ll learn what separates winners from losers. Winners know how to
Select the best games.
Beat those games.
SELECT THE BEST GAMES.
It’s the most important poker and business decision. If you choose the right games, you’ll probably win. Choose the wrong ones, and you’ll probably lose
Your EDGE is critically important. You’ll learn how to analyze everyone’s strengths and weaknesses and select games that give you the biggest edge.
BEAT THOSE GAMES.
Winners know how to increase their poker or business edge. You’ll learn
The biggest difference between winners and losers.
Avoid the KISS trap.
Know when to compete and cooperate.
Vary your relationship style.
Manage risks dispassionately.
Adjust your communication pattern.
Be mentally tough.
Act decisively.
The Biggest Difference Between Winners and Losers.
Winners do whatever THIS situation requires, but losers yield to their inner needs. Winners realistically analyze situations and choose actions that get the best results, while losers emphasize comfort, react emotionally, don’t analyze enough, or don’t act decisively.
Avoid the KISS Trap.
Losers love KISS (Keep It Short and Simple), but poker and business aren’t simple.
Losers often ask experts, “How should I play these cards?” They want a simple answer, but the experts generally reply, “It depends upon the situation.” That principle applies to most poker and business decisions.
Know When to Compete and Cooperate.
Extreme competitiveness creates unnecessary battles. Excessively cooperative people get run over.
Winners compete or cooperate only when it’s appropriate. As Kenny Rogers sings, “You’ve got to know when to hold them, know when to fold them.”
Vary Your Relationship Style.
We can relate in three ways
We can move toward people (dependence) with friendliness and trust.
We can move away from them (detachment) with facts and logic.
We can move against them (dominance) with power and aggression.
Losers relate the way they prefer, but winners vary their approach to fit the situation.
Manage Risks Dispassionately.
Losers have two ineffective reactions.
Risk-avoiders have “analysis paralysis.”
Risk-seekers take unnecessary risks for “kicks.”
Winners are risk-takers. They objectively analyze situations, create edges, and act decisively.
Risk-seekers and risk-avoiders lose, while risk-takers win.
Adjust Your Communication Pattern.
The best pattern depends upon the situation, but losers use the one they prefer.
In competitive situations, if others conceal information while you share openly, you’ll lose.
In cooperative situations, communicating openly builds trust and exchanges information you all need.
Be Mentally Tough.
Poker Hall of Famer, Barry Greenstein, said it’s winners’ most important trait “The best don’t give in, no matter how severe the psychological beating.” You need toughness in both poker and business to bounce back from mistakes and bad luck.
Act Decisively.
These points create an edge, but it’s worthless unless you act DECISIVELY. Your bosses, customers, suppliers, etc. reward you only for successful actions.
THE BOTTOM LINE
It’s a formidable list, but it’s hard to beat poker or business. To learn more about beating these tough games, click here.

In Dr. Alan Schoonmakers latest book "Competitive Edge For Poker And Business Winners", he pulls no punches. Poker is a business; period, end of story! It is a brutal essay that will give you the psychological edge you need once you really understand that winning is everything and very attainable. Congrats Dr. Schoonmaker, a great read!
Like much of Dr. Schoonmaker's writing, this book offers solid information on the mandatory skills one needs to win at poker, business and life. There is no hand holding or bad beat talk, so if you are a loser looking for sympathy, go elsewhere. Only through realistic thinking, discipline and self monitoring can one improve ANY aspect of life. If you want to be a winner, check your ego at page one and read this book.
This is a really well written book - and I don't know much about poker! I read it for the business insights, and you can use the author's strategies in many areas of life. Perhaps you are buying a car or thinking of talking to your boss about a pay raise? Or just want some insights from a psychologist about how business dealing work. Then this is book is a great choice. And with a business man about to enter the White House, now might be the best time to get that competitive edge...
Rather than telling you how to play, this book teaches you how to think. Winners think differently from losers. It's true in both business and poker. I've always thought that enterpreneurs and CEO's have skills that readily transfer to poker. This book identifies and examines those skills, providing key insights into how to succeed at both business and poker.
This review is based on a gift copy of the book from the author.
Amazing book. This gave me tons of insights and life strategies. I started playing poker to learn how to make better decision in business and life and this book gave me many if not all the insight and analogies I was looking by playing the game. This is a very powerful book for me.
